REMEDIATION OF A LARGE SPILL OF DIESEL FUEL
EUREKOS
is accomplishing the final step of a very large remediation
project of an area polluted by more than 3.000.000 litres
of diesel fuel that reached the groundwater at a depth of
about 10 meters. The investigations indicated the presence
of more than 2 meters of product on the exploration boreholes
and by the geophysical investigations it was possible to to
map the distribution of the product and to define the best
position for the remediation wells.
After the remediation works that lasted some years the actual
level in the boreholes settled to a few millimetres and permitted
the development of in-situ pilot test to evaluate the possibility
to apply bioremediation techniques for a further clean-up
of the area.
The results of the test demonstrated the feasibility of the
bioremediation, and the results obtained by the combination
of the techniques applied by Eurekos. The original 2000 millimetres
existing in some boreholes have been reduced to a few millimetres
that, by the bioremediation were reduced to a less than 300
p.p.m.
EUREKOS has carried out the whole management of this project,
from the investigation, to the design and selection of the
remediation equipments, maintaining also the contacts and
relations with the Public Authorities and Third Parties.

REMEDIATION BY BIO-STIMULATION
A
spill of heating oil from an underground tank polluted a small
and intermittent aquifer feeding a spring and a spring-barrier
pond on the side of a forested and very steep hill.
The subsoil was formed by a few centimetres of soil overlying
fractured rocks; this situation prevented the possibility
to use hydraulic gradients to drive the pollutant and the
polluted groundwater toward collecting/separation points.
By means of a Soil Gas Survey investigation we obtained a
map of the distribution of the pollutant that was used to
design the de-pollution procedures. The first action was to
remediate the pond by a mixture of oil-absorbing natural clay
integrated by bacteria and nutrients; the second step was
the bio-stimulation of the soil bacteria by the increase of
the available oxygen. The oxygen availability was enhanced
by the injection of a sludge of ORC –Regenesis (Oxygen Release
Compound) through the holes used by the SGS investigation
integrated , where needed, by new ones.
After 60 days the hydrocarbon concentrations in the soil reached
330 p.p.m. And the decrease continued up to a level below
the law limits.
A bio-barrier to protect a second small spring was realised
using a line of small boreholes equipped with ORC .
The project was satisfactory accomplished and the results
were supervised by the Local Authorities that confirmed the
depollution of the area.
